That is a bit frustrating, because I intended to play this one to see the story as the gameplay obviously just improves in future games. She just chills in a hot spring alone for like ten seconds. Even finishing Nō's campaign left with a very short cutscene that was. I died the first time I played the stage, because there are so many strong enemies surrounding Zavi, as you can see here (not my footage):Īpparently, if you pick certain battles with certain characters, there are anime and CG cutscenes to flesh out a little story. While there are a few pretty basic ones, Zavi's (the Portuguese cult leader also new to me) stands out for having just a really weird atmosphere between the music and his zealots chanting odd things. The bosses in general feel like they have too much health, so most of the stages feel a little dull by the end.Įven at the beginning of the series, the stages are mostly interesting. If you're unlucky, you won't get any strong weapons and each boss will take forever to chip away at. At the end of each battle, you get random items and weapons. You equip two out of a total six triangle attacks at a time and switch them with L1-this system is improved greatly in later games.

You have your square combo, triangle unique attack, and circle for basara (a super move that requires a full meter).

super OP, actually! She fights with guns, so you can essentially keep every enemy at a distance and chip away their health. I decided to start with Nōhime, Oda Nobunaga's wife, because she wasn't in any of the games I'd played before. Whoever you don't pick ends up fighting with the other remaining factions and either gets conquered or (in some later games) forms an alliance. You start with one region and one character, and then you select who you'd like to fight next.

Unification is the mode that's typically present in every iteration of the series in some form. There are two modes: unification and free mode. I'm surprised by how little content there is, but I suppose I shouldn't be since it's the first entry.

I did a quick playthrough of 1, 2, 2: Heroes, and 3 over the weekend, but I want to go back and play each for longer. It'll probably take me a long time to get through the whole series because trying to play them all in succession sounds like it would lead to burnout real quick. I ordered the HD collection and the Japanese version of 3 since I'd only played 3 with English VO before. This time, I have decided to start at the beginning and play 1, 2, 2: Heroes, 3, 3: Utage, 4, 4: Sumeragi, and Yukimura-den (which is the game blamed for the series going on hiatus due to its horrible sales). So, that's really my history with the series. Finally, I played Sengoku Basara 4, and then a bit of 4 Sumeragi and Yukimura-den through PS+.

I also played the first PSP game and Sengoku Basara X (arcsys fighting game), which I wasn't so hot on. I knew about Devil Kings (the US name for the first game) when it came out, but I never picked it up-I was just happy with Dynasty Warriors back then. My introduction to the series was Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes for PS3. I played the hell out of Samurai Warriors 5 on release, and that made me really miss Sengoku Basara. Masamune would be excited for an RttP, I think.
